African Tribal Masks - A Unique Home Decoration

All of us choose to decorate our living space differently. My husband and I like to surround ourselves with mementos that we have collected through the years. I feel that we have created a warm welcoming home. My husband’s brother on the other hand is beginning to decorate their home with mementos of his favorite hobby, which is hunting. They have a multitude of animal mounts displayed in a huge family room that they added on to their home.

My brother-in-law has a great deal of money and he spends a large share of it hunting. He has been on hunting trips across the United States, Canada and Africa. His favorite place to hunt is Africa so he has used this as the main theme in their family room. Along with the mounts of the different animals he also has African tribal masks hung through out the room. My husband and I were looking at them during a family gathering. The African tribal masks appeared to be carved out of wood and were painted in several bright colors. Some of them were very beautiful and others were quite frightening. I asked my brother-in-law if it was difficult to get the African tribal masks. He pointed out two that he had brought back on the last trip he was on. He said that it had been difficult getting them through customs because some of the African tribal masks are very expensive and are not allowed to leave the country. After two hours of questions and showing receipts he was allowed to bring the African tribal masks into the United States. I was about to ask him about the rest of the masks that were on display, but he was called away for a telephone call.

A few weeks later my sister-in-law asked me if I wanted to meet her for lunch. She said that she had some shopping to do and needed to run a few errands for my brother-in-law. We made arrangements to meet at a restaurant near one of the stores she planned to shop at. I arrived early and went over to the World Market to shop until lunch time. My sister-in-law was there buying several items including two African tribal masks. She had several other African artifacts also. She explained that she was going to extend the African theme into other areas of their home. She seemed embarrassed to have me find out that the articles that I thought were purchased in Africa were actually bought locally. Knowing this has taken away some of the wonder of their space. Many of the things in their African themed room were made in Korea.
